The time we are living in is called „Anthropocene“, the age in which humans are the driving factor of the planet's development. The Anthropocene results in climate change, degradation of land, massive reduction of biodiversity, exploitation of natural resources. To keep it short: The Anthropocene does not seem to be very resilient.

To change that, we have to better understand what kind of architecture shapes the Anthropocene - from factories to landfills, from refugee camps to border controls, from windmills to solar roofs: What is the future heritage of our time? What kind of buildings and landscapes future cultures will excavate to understand how we destroyed the planet?

In this panel discussion, Prof. Els Verbakel, Head of the School of Architecture, and Prof. Friedrich von Borries invite us to take a look at different phenomena, from the destruction of the planet to attempts to save it, and raise questions and contradictions about life on this earth and coexistence.

The evening takes place in cooperation with Bezalel  Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem and Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (HFBK).

This lecture is part I of the event series "The Heritage of the Future" as part of the Salon Liebling on Thursday evening.

Prof. Els Verbakel, Head of the School of Architecture, UNESCO Chair in Urban Design and Conservation Studies, BEZALEL Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem

Prof. Els Verbakel is a founding partner of Derman Verbakel Architecture and Head of the School of Architecture at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem. She was a faculty member at the Technion in Haifa, Columbia University, NYC, Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, and Princeton University, New Jersey. Els has earned her PhD in Architecture from Princeton University, a Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University, and a Graduate Degree in Civil Engineering and Architecture from the University of Leuven, Belgium. She served as the editor of two books: “In Search of the Public. Notes on the Contemporary American City” and “Constellations: Constructing Urban Design Practices” as well as the Architectural Design (AD) Magazine on the theme “Cities of Dispersal.

Prof. Friedrich von Borries, Architecture and design theorist, curator and writer

Friedrich von Borries teaches design theory at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (HFBK). He researches the relationship between society and design, deals with sustainability and the possibilities of social transformation and works at the intersection of architecture, design and art. At the core of his work, he researches and designs the political issues that determine our present. In addition to exhibitions, scientific studies and publications, he also develops master plans, films, design objects and artistic projects.

Arch. Sharon Golan, Co-founder & LAB director of Liebling Haus

Architect and urban planner Sharon Golan specializes in building bridges between sustainable city planning and heritage conservation aiming to create a dialogue between the past and the future. As a founder of the Liebling Haus, she has pursued the idea of a bilateral German-Israeli architectural research center. Nowadays as the Liebling LAB director she is creating platforms for holistic knowledge exchange aimed towards the research of the future of urban living.

Martin Rein-Cano, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1967, studied art history at Frankfurt University and landscape architecture at the Technical Universities of Hannover and Karlsruhe

Dr. Miri Lavi Neeman, Arava institute for environmental studies, Director of the center for hyper arid social ecologies, Tel Aviv University

Lavi Neeman is a political ecologist. She is currently a faculty member at the Arava Institute for Environmental studies where she also serves as the director of CHASE the center for hyper arid social ecologies. She is also a researcher and a lecturer at the Tel Aviv University  international Masters program in social aspect of climate change.

Her current research focus on climate changes as they occur at the margins of states , and on the new epistemologies , vocabularies and research methodologies of the Anthropocene. Prior to her arrival at arava she lived in Berkeley California where she earned her ph.d at the department of geography, and continued as a post doctoral fellow  at the UC Berkeley law school.

She was also the research director of the center for Jewish law economy and society where she promoted international environmental research partnerships between Jews and Palestinians.

Dr. Aiman Tabony, Architect and Researcher, Co-director at ALT - Llabres Tabony Architects, London

Aiman Tabony, an architect and researcher, holds a degree from the Technion and completed his doctoral studies at the AA School of Architecture in London. Currently teaching at the School of Architecture in Bezalel Academy of Art, he is also the co-founder of Llabres Tabony Architects (ALT), a multidisciplinary architecture design studio with offices in London, Haifa, and Shanghai. Aiman's work ethos focuses on a critical approach to ecology and urbanism, exploring the interplay between the natural and built environments. By bridging these realms, he creates environmentally conscious and culturally rich designs, addressing global challenges while immersing in

local cultures.

Dan Hasson is an Architect, designer and a lecturer at the School of Architecture at Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem. He specializes in public projects that integrate new approaches towards conservation and public spaces, in exhibition design and private and commercial projects. Among his public works are the Liebling Haus and The Music Center, Both in Tel Aviv. Hasson was the co-curator and chief designer of the 2021 Israeli Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, showcasing the exhibition -  Land. Milk. Honey: Animal Stories in Imagined Landscapes. The project’s research catalog won the DAM Architectural Book Award for 2021. In his academic work, Hasson deals with the reciprocal relations between landscape, ecology and politics in the Israeli context.

העידן שאנו חיים בו מכונה "אנתרופוקן" – תקופה שבה בני האדם הם שמניעים את התפתחות כדור הארץ. תוצאות האנתרופוקן הן התחממות גלובלית, דגנרציה של האדמה, צמצום מסיבי של המגוון הביולוגי, ניצול מוגזם של מקורות טבע. בקצרה, האנתרופוקן לא מצטייר כעידן חסין במיוחד.

כדי לשנות את המצב עלינו להבין איזה סוגים של מבנים מעצבים את האנתרופוקן – ממפעלים ועד מטמנות, ממחנות פליטים ועד ביקורת גבולות, מתחנות רוח ועד גגות סולאריים: מהי מורשת העתיד של זמננו? איזה סוגים של בניינים וצורות יתגלו בחפירות, שיבצעו בני תרבויות עתידיות כדי להבין כיצד הרסנו את כדור הארץ?

בדיון פאנל בהשתתפות פרופ' אדר' אלס ורבקל (Els Verbakel), ראשת בית הספר לאדריכלות בבצלאל, ירושלים, וד"ר פרידריך ון בורייס (Friedrich von Borries) מהאוניברסיטה לאמנויות יפות בהמבורג, נתבונן בתופעות שונות, החל בהרס  כדור הארץ וכלה במאמצים להצילו, תוך העלאת שאלות ובעיות, החיים על פני כדור הארץ ודו-קיום.

האירוע הוא שיתוף פעולה בין בצלאל, האקדמיה לאמנות ועיצוב, ירושלים, והאוניברסיטה לאמנויות יפות, המבורג (HFBK).

פרופ' אדר' אלס ורבקל היא שותפה מייסדת של המשרד דרמן ורבקל אדריכלות וראש בית הספר לארכיטקטורה בבצלאל.  לימדה בטכניון, באוניברסיטת קולומביה, ניו יורק, בפראט, ברוקלין ובאוניברסיטת פרינסטון, ניו ג'רזי. בעלת דוקטורט באדריכלות מאוניברסיטת פרינסטון, תואר שני באדריכלות ועיצוב עירוני מאוניברסיטת קולומביה, ניו יורק, ותואר ראשון באדריכלות והנדסה אזרחית מאוניברסיטת לובן, בלגיה. הוציאה לאור שני ספרים בעריכתה: In Search of the Public: Notes on the Contemporary American City  ו-Constellations: Constructing Urban Design Practices. ערכה גיליון של  Architectural Design (AD) Magazine  בנושא Cities of Dispersal.

ד"ר פרידריך ון בורייס הוא פרופסור לתיאוריה של עיצוב בבית הספר לאמנויות יפות, המבורג . הוא חוקר את היחס בין חברה לעיצוב וקיימות, וכן אפשרויות של שינויים חברתיים. עבודתו ממוקדת בצומת שבין אדריכלות, עיצוב ואמנות.  חוקר ומעצב סוגיות פוליטיות המשפיעות על ההווה. בנוסף על תערוכות, מחקרים מדעיים ופרסומים, הוא מפתח תוכניות-אב, סרטים, אובייקטים ופרויקטים אמנותיים.

אדר' שרון גולן היא מתכננת ערים המתמחה ביצירת חיבורים בין תכנון ערים בר-קיימא לשימור מורשת המבקש לייצר דיאלוג בין העבר להווה. כמייסדת בית ליבלינג, הקימה את מרכז חקר האדריכלות הגרמני-ישראלי. בתפקידה הנוכחי כמנהלת מעבדת בית ליבלינג היא מייצרת פלטפורמות לחילופי מידע המכוונים כלפי חקר העתיד של החיים האורבניים.

ד"ר אדר' איימן טבוני הוא חוקר ומנהל שותף במשרד האדריכלים.  בעל תואר באדריכלות מהטכניון ודוקטורט מבית הספר  לאדריכלות בלונדון. הוא מלמד בבית הספר לארכיטקטורה, בצלאל, ירושלים. טבעוני הוא מייסד-שותף בלבריס-טבעוני  אדריכלים (ALT), משרד מולטידיציפלינרי עם משרדים בלונדון, חיפה ושנגחאי. המשרד מתמחה בגישה ביקורתית כלפי הסביבה והעירוניות תוך חקירה של ההדדיות בין סביבות טבעיות לבנויות. בעבודתו הוא מגשר בין עולמות אלה ביצירה של עיצובים שמתייחסים אל ההיבטים האקולוגיים והתרבותיים, לאתגרים האקלימיים ולצורך להיטמע בתרבות המקומית.

ד"ר מירי לביא נאמן היא מומחית לאקולוגיה פוליטית. חברת סגל במכון ערבה ללימודי הסביבה שם היא עומדת בראש המרכז לסוציו-אקולוגיה מדברית . היא חוקרת ומרצה על ההיבטים החברתיים של ההתחממות העולמית בתוכנית הבינלאומית לתאור שני באוניברסיטת תל אביב. מחקריה הנוכחיים מתמקדים בהשפעות ההתחממות הגלובלית על אזורי ספר ועל אפיסטמולויות, שפות ומתודולוגיות לחקר האנרופיקון. לביא נאמן בעלת דוקטורט מהמחלקה לגאוגרפיה באוניברסיטת ברקלי, קליפורניה, שם המשיכה כפוסט-דוקטורנטית עמיתה בפקולטה למשפט. היא אף פעלה באוניברסיטת ברקלי כמנהלת מחקר במרכז לחוק, כלכלה וחברה בישראל (ILES) לקידום יוזמות בינלאומיות לשיתופי פעולה בין יהודים לפלסטינים בחקר הסביבה.

אדר' דן חסון הוא מעצב ומרצה בבית הספר לאדריכלות בבצלאל אקדמיה לאמנות ועיצוב, ירושלים.  מתמחה בפרויקטים ציבוריים המיישמים גישות חדשות לשימור ומרחבים ציבוריים, עיצוב תערוכות ופרויקטים מסחריים פרטיים וציבוריים. בין עבודותיו הציבוריות, בית ליבלינג ומרכז המוזיקה, שניהם בתל אביב. היה אוצר-שותף ומעצב ראשי של הביתן הישראלי בביאנלה לאדריכלות בוונציה ב-2021, שם הוצגה התערוכה "אדמה. חלב. דבש: סיפורי חיות בנופים מדומיינים". קטלוג המחקר של הפרויקט זכה בפרס DAM לספרי אדריכלות ב-2021. בעבודתו האקדמית  חוקר את היחסים ההדדיים בין נוף, אקולוגיה ופוליטיקה בישראל.
