Welcome to the Republic

In this project, the Liebling Haus - a new cultural center in a historical residential building - seeks to declare itself as Public Space, an elusive inconsistent concept, especially these days. To this end, the Center’s staff embarks on a journey of learning, rites of passage and stays - a necessary step in converting the spaces of the house from a residential apartment to a public place.

The Center operates in alternating situations, providing a different engagement on the private and public scale, when visitors’ experience varies from one room to the other, sometimes depending on the occasion and circumstances.

The works featured throughout the building explore public space as they shift between two points of view: internally - from within the house, and from the city to our surroundings, reviewing our behavior in public space and the new civic discourse created within it. The project, which began to take shape before the pandemic, expanded into new dimensions, evolving and extending over an unknown period.

Recently, public and private space has been redefined for all of us, shrinking and expanding according to requirements and regulations, augmenting the limits of our physical and mental abilities. Attempting to capture the right moment - between one lockdown and another, one political struggle and the other - we defined the building as a time and public space capsule, which will allow us to redefine these concepts through the transition between the building’s spaces, providing additional perspectives on public space for us, as individuals and citizens.

Like public space in those challenging times, the project will also change its nature according to health regulations. Sometimes it will be an exhibition, sometimes a festival or event, but it will always be accessible online: www.welcometotherepublic.org
