Liebling Salon: Waking the Bear #1 – Planning and Designing the New Sde Dov Area

How do you design a new neighborhood while retaining the unmistakable Tel Aviv DNA? How can you develop a diverse housing mix to appeal to various populations and encourage them to live there? What considerations should guide the design of public spaces to ensure they are lively, engaging, and accessible?

Defining a new neighborhood's design involves establishing a cohesive architectural language. This includes creating inviting human-scaled public spaces, designing façades that effectively flow between private and public areas, and developing a unique identity for the location using Tel Aviv's architectural features and local landscapes. Additionally, integrating sustainability and accessibility principles is essential throughout the planning process, among other considerations.

During the evening, we will discuss urban and architectural planning issues, including how to characterize a new neighborhood and what elements should define the space based on the updated zoning and architectural plans in development. The program includes brief lectures (approximately 6 minutes each) and themed roundtable discussions, encouraging active participation in a meaningful dialogue about the key issues of planning a new neighborhood in Israel. Our goal is to cultivate a professional exchange among all stakeholders, aiming to effectively and comprehensively tackle the complex and influential project of the Sde Dov area.

"Waking the Bear" consists of two meetings within the Liebling Salon, where we will discuss the development of the Sde Dov area, currently the largest urban neighborhood under construction. These meetings will provide insights into the district's future and the planning process from various perspectives: the regulator, the planner, and the developer. Our goal is to encourage honest dialogue about the challenges and opportunities such a large-scale neighborhood presents. The events primarily target professionals, including urban planners, architects, developers, real estate experts, and landscape designers.

Liebling Salon was created to spark discussions about preserving the essence of Tel Aviv-Yafo during this period of rapid transformation. The gatherings focus on tackling contemporary challenges in the field, especially as the city's historical layers gain fresh significance and the conflict between the old and the new intensifies.

The meetings occur every two months. Admission: 40 ILS (including light refreshments)
