The third evening in the "Urban Kibbutz – Affordable Housing" series focuses on the question of how ideas of sharing, community, and democratic management can be translated into sustainable models of urban housing in today's reality.
The twin cities of Tel Aviv-Yafo and Frankfurt face similar challenges: continuous increases in housing prices, instability in the rental market, difficulty in creating affordable housing, and a growing need for new forms of residence that can respond to changing urban life. These challenges highlight the need to examine not only the physical form of the building but also the mechanisms that allow it to exist: who finances it, who manages it, who lives there, and how the community is preserved over time.
Through short presentations and case studies from Tel Aviv-Yafo, Frankfurt, and other locations, we will address new models of cooperative housing, long-term rental housing, residential communities, urban kibbutzim, and innovative forms of residence. We will examine how historical ideas of sharing, such as the Israeli Kibbutz, can serve as a source of inspiration for rethinking residence in a free market and a capitalist economy, in a dense, expensive, and multi-layered city.

“Urban Kibbutz – Affordable Housing” is a series of four hybrid meetings, held to mark 45 years of the twin-city relations between Tel Aviv-Yafo and Frankfurt. The goal of the series is to move beyond the framework of theoretical research and create a practical initiative that will culminate in a public open discussion and be implemented in both cities.
The series is held as part of “Liebling Salon,” and the meeting was planned in collaboration with the Strategic Planning Unit as part of an in-depth work on financing affordable housing, led by Ella Weber and Galit Mimran.
