Architecture and the built environment hold the stories, values, and beliefs of the era in which they were created. They reflect culture, power relations, and political conflict alongside technological, economic, and ecological conditions. In the “Heritage of the Future” exhibition, we ask not what the future will look like, but how the present will be read from within it – and what we are leaving for those who come after us. What role does architecture play, not only as a physical force shaping the built environment, but also as a cultural, political, and social mechanism that shapes how we imagine the future, interpret the past, and experience the present?
To mark the opening of the exhibition, we will hold a rolling discussion across its four main themes, with a new conversation beginning each hour. This is an invitation to view the present from a future perspective – not as an escape from reality, but as a way of questioning what we take for granted. When the present is viewed as a future archaeological layer, the everyday – the square, the sign, the bus stop, the street, even concepts like technology and progress – mean something else. What will be preserved? What will disappear? And what will it say about us?
The discussion will be held in English, with the exhibiting architects and the exhibition curators, Friedrich von Borries and Sabrina Cegla, in attendance.
