Bauhaus Week Haifa | Learning Like Bauhaus: Hands-on Workshop in the Footsteps of the Masters

How were art and design taught at the school that changed the face of modern creation? What can we discover about color, shape, and material through simple exercises? And how do observation and experimentation transform into a creative act?

In this two-and-a-half-hour hands-on workshop, we will return to the Bauhaus classrooms and experiment with a series of original exercises taught at the school about a century ago, alongside contemporary exercises developed in their inspiration.

Through brief and diverse experiments, we will get to know the teaching methods of some of the most prominent Bauhaus masters: Johannes Itten, Josef Albers, László Moholy-Nagy, Anni Albers, and Wassily Kandinsky. We will work with everyday materials, explore the relationships between colors, shapes, and textures, experiment with repetition and pattern, and discover how movement, touch, and action can unlock new possibilities for creation.

The workshop is based on research by artist Tal Alperstein, conducted at the Liebling Haus School of the city, focusing on Bauhaus teaching methods—specifically its revolutionary Foundation Course (Vorkurs). In the spirit of the school’s educational philosophy, which placed doing, experimentation, and discovery at the center, we will momentarily set aside our prior knowledge to encounter familiar materials and shapes with fresh eyes.

About the Instructor

Tal Alperstein (b. 1985) is a multidisciplinary artist working in video, collage, and performance. She holds a BFA in Art from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design and an MA from the Steve Tisch School of Film and Television at Tel Aviv University. In both her artistic practice and teaching, she explores the relationships between body, action, material, and image, with a keen interest in the creative potential embedded in everyday actions and processes of experimentation and discovery. Since 2017, she has been teaching at the Liebling Haus in Tel Aviv, where she develops and leads art and design workshops and educational programs.
