Sharon Golan-Yaron, program director of the Liebling Haus, talks with Basel-based architect Manuel Herz about architectural typologies and architecture's role in a contested, socio-political environment.

Herz has recently completed the Babyn Yar synagogue (Kyiv, Ukraine) and the maternity and pediatric clinic in Tambacounda Hospital (Senegal). His design of the Jewish Community Center of Mainz is considered a new standard in synagogue architecture. His firm is working on the Cologne synagogue, a large hospital in Senegal, and other projects worldwide. A former teacher at Harvard University and ETH Zürich, Herz is a professor at the University of Basel. His books feature research on architecture and migration and 20th-century architecture in Africa.

His office is currently transforming the Cologne Synagogue, building a large hospital in Senegal, and constructing several projects across Europe and beyond. Manuel has taught at Harvard University, at the ETH Zürich and is a professor at the University of Basel, where he has researched and published on architecture of migration and 20th century architecture on the African continent.
