Heart of the City (Workshop for Ages 9-11)

In this workshop, we will embark on a journey of imagination and observation, exploring the special relationship between our bodies and the city of Tel Aviv-Yafo. We will think of the city as a body with its own heart, lungs, eyes, and transportation routes, and try to understand how the body's functions and the city's functions resemble and influence one another. We will examine how streets, markets, gardens, and buildings operate like bodily systems: respiratory, circulatory, memory, and sensory. Through examples from artworks, diagrams, and activities, we will explore how the city responds to us and how we respond to it, and what makes us feel a sense of belonging, comfort, or curiosity in a space. At the end of the workshop, each participant will create a personal map – a connection between our body and Tel Aviv-Yafo – sketching places linked to our feelings and memories and seeing how personal experience is woven into the city's structure.

This activity takes place as part of the exhibition Life, Plant, City: 100 Years of Geddes' Plan for Tel Aviv's Garden City. The exhibition explores the planning and social vision of Patrick Geddes, planner of the city of Tel Aviv and a multidisciplinary thinker who believed that the role of planning is to balance human needs with their environment.

To complement the exhibition, the School of the City at Liebling Haus is holding workshops on Tel Aviv-Yafo and our lives in the city through sensory experiences: observation, listening, dwelling, and imagination. The school offers an interdisciplinary approach developed by professionals from architecture, design, urbanism, and art.
