מאסטר קלאס בשימור ואדריכלות #1: מיגון

In recent weeks, architectural conservation has returned to the headlines. Missile strikes in the heart of Tel Aviv have caused damage to designated heritage buildings and reignited a heated public debate: is it possible to conserve historic structures while ensuring adequate life-safety standards? Does investment in conservation come at the expense of structural retrofitting? And what is required to safeguard the built environment without compromising its architectural and cultural significance? According to estimates, more than one hundred listed buildings were damaged during the last two rounds of escalation between Israel and Iran—a figure that underscores how this issue is not theoretical, but an urgent reality shaping the urban fabric.

The first session in the series was dedicated precisely to these questions. Using the current context as a case study, we examined the tension between conservation and protection requirements, between heritage values and contemporary engineering and safety standards. The event also presented emerging methods and technologies for integrating protected spaces (Mamad) in compliance with conservation regulations, offering innovative approaches to current challenges, alongside case studies from Israel and abroad. We sought to unpack decision-making processes in the field of conservation, and to address the professional, regulatory, and public challenges faced by those responsible for managing and preserving the built heritage.
