Shadow Maps for Urban Planning in Tel Aviv-Jaffa
Israel is a country with a hot climate with long months in which high levels of exposure to direct solar radiation are recorded. In most parts of the country, exposure to this radiation, apart from the known damage it causes to human health, is also responsible more than any other climatic factor (air temperature, relative humidity and wind speed) for significant damage to the thermal comfort of those using the streets and open spaces of the urban environment. For exactly the same reason, walking or staying in a shaded environment, even at the height of the hot season, may completely change the feeling of personal comfort, even without a significant change in the air temperature or the strength of the breeze. The purpose of this research is to provide tools to bridge the existing gap between theoretical climate knowledge and accepted practices of urban planning using the mapping tool in computerized geographic information systems (GIS).
