Additions to Conservation Buildings, Layer 2.0: The Cultural Significance of a Multilayered City
By Mr. Amir Peleg, holder of a master's degree in architecture from the UPC University of Barcelona
Research management: Orit Rosenthal, senior conservation architect. Conservation Department, Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality
Research status: in preparation
In Tel Aviv-Yafo there are currently about 2,300 buildings designated for preservation, by virtue of various programs from the late 1980s until today. The vast majority of middle-class buildings are allowed construction additions. From the beginning of the nineties onwards, several hundred additions were indeed added to the buildings designated for preservation. Now, after almost 30 years have passed, the time has come to investigate these construction extensions, in order to learn from what has already been done and create an array of planning tools for building future additions. The research traces and attempts to read the cultural significance of the construction extensions on top of buildings for preservation and examine their role in urban development.
